What to consider
Measure the fireplace opening
Each insert publishes a minimum opening in the manufacturer's manual. If the existing masonry opening is smaller, that model will not fit.
Plan for a full-height liner
Wood inserts are installed with a continuous stainless steel liner running the full height of the chimney. Liner work is part of the project, not an optional extra.
Check emissions rules locally
Some jurisdictions set stricter particulate limits than the federal standard. Published emissions figures matter if you are in one of them.
